workin stiffs
oh hey its been a while
so den and john mcgett have decided they no longer want to be rappers, and want to start a social club called "workin stiffs" that is all about drinking with your friends, working a steady job (for the man of course) and sweet ass tattoos. john did a logo that was, well, rough, so i offered to clean it up for him.
johns drawing before the jump, and mine after
created with illustrator and some clip art, which i wasnt happy with so i ended up drawing a lot of the vectors myself. im still not happy with it, this was just a proof to send john

what, this isnt the line for the apple store?
In July (?) when the iPhone came out, Philadelphia's mayor, John Street (far right, sitting), decided that the climbing murder rate and skyrocketing poverty in the city could wait a few hours, but his burning desire for the newest status symbol of consumer gluttony could not. He bravely and deftly joined the hundreds (or, lets be honest, probably thousands) of people lined up in cities and towns all over the country to wait patiently in line for his iPhone. He braved rain, unseasonable chilly temps, and tingling limbs from cut off circulation for his chance to be among the first to get his paws on multi-touch imput. Today, Philadelphia's new mayor, Michael Nutter, opened the doors of City Hall to any person who wanted to come in and check under the hood. He has vowed to stay until the last person leaves. This is what it might look like if Street had been as eager to go to work in the mornings as he was to be a techie.

Happy New Year?
So it turns out I completely over-estimated how much spare time I have at work / how funny I am, so yet again I have work stuff to show instead of simpsons characters photoshopped into inappropriate historic photographs. After the jump, the Pats made history (yawn) so I made a photo-illustration (double yawn) and Lindsay went on vacation so I worked on culture section.
So this was kind of a collaborative effort between myself, Drew and Brendan. The two of them came up with the idea of the door and the terribly punny headline, and wanted me to put the Pats logo where the mail slot of the door was. I did that, to show them how gay it would look, and then did this as kind of a joke and they both loved it. Working with the two of them is interesting, because things I think they'll love they hate and things I hate and think they'll hate, they love. It's good though because they're also both completely unafraid to tell me when they think an idea is terrible. Anyway, above is the photo-illustration in the context of the page, and below is a closer look.
The whole thing was done in Quark, and in like, 35 seconds. Seriously. If I had spent any more time on it or made it any more complicated, I probably would have fucked it up. And even though I wasn't really married to it to begin with, I have to admit that it looked really good in print.
Next up, year-end culture section. We have a new kid in the culture department (because there's a new kid it's now a "culture department" and not just "Lindsay") so I guess Lindsay thought it would be ok to leave the country for a while. New kid was kind of shitting himself over the whole thing, so I helped him out. He had grand ideas for the layout of the year end spread but I reeled him in and showed him how sometimes by scaling back things you love you can come up with something you can be proud of that also fits into our paper. Below is the beginning spread of the culture section for the weekend. I also designed the cover, but then new kid put a Shins picture in one of the boxes so I'm kind of boycotting it right now.
Ok that's it for today. Maybe tomorrow I'll post some stuff from the Christmas issue. It was a little out of hand though and I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.

christmas break
it's christmas break, and i'm off from work for a few days so i'll be posting even less than usual. in my absence, please enjoy the links i've posted to my friends blogs. krystle and jared have horribly untended photoblogs, brendan writes a fairly untended college basketball blog (i designed the header with the philly skyline), mike ford and bushy post bangers that will make you wish you did more/better drugs, and ali does a food blog that will make you sad that she married ben stafford of the philadelphia phantoms/the mighty ducks/yale university/jefferson med school/the us marine corps instead of you.

Winter Sports Guide 2007
So, my apologies for failing to update, even though no one really reads this anyway. Things got a little away from me the last week and a half or so at work, plus I'm incredibly lazy. I'm going to continue the theme of sports guide covers in honor of Seth leaving The Bulletin, so without further ado, here's the Winter Sports Guide cover of 2007, and another special surprise for the lack of updates.
As usual, Krystle shot the photo for the cover. We were going for something similar to the Fall Sports Guide, since we were tired and lazy and under the gun. There was a lot of pizza that day, as well as a lot of drinking. We actually had a better idea that got vetoed because of time restraints. Maybe I'll clean that one up and post it it for comparison, but probably not until at least the Spring Guide.
Below is the cover (top half above the fold) of the paper from the night before the mayoral primary last May in Philly. For anyone unaware, pretty much whomever wins the democratic nod in the primary is going to win any election in Philadelphia, as it is completely unheard of for a Republican to win this season. If you're confused by this, watch the first half of the 4th season of The Wire and pay attention to the politics of it. Basically the same thing, except our current mayor actually might be worse than that dude.
Picture of City Hall was from Krystle, candidate head shots were from Krystle and Jared.
I might post again later with a return to some fun stuff, but don't hold your breath

Fall Sports Guide 2007
The Fall Sports Guide was a little sleeker and more well thought out overall, although I was less hands on in it's creation and more of a director conceptually (hey, like what a real art director should be!). It was also published after the addition of the weekend tab section of the paper, where all "special sections" are now regulated. To be honest, I didn't like working in this format overall for sports, but it worked out pretty well for the cover, which is after the jump.
This is probably the 2nd or 3rd draft of this idea, as I ended up having to sacrifice a few issues like spacing and word placement to the fact that the sports boys refused to let me lead off with less popular sports.
That's how it finally appeared in the paper. I'm personally still partial to my placement of the words Fall Sports, but I compromise is king.
