So it turns out I completely over-estimated how much spare time I have at work / how funny I am, so yet again I have work stuff to show instead of simpsons characters photoshopped into inappropriate historic photographs. After the jump, the Pats made history (yawn) so I made a photo-illustration (double yawn) and Lindsay went on vacation so I worked on culture section.
So this was kind of a collaborative effort between myself, Drew and Brendan. The two of them came up with the idea of the door and the terribly punny headline, and wanted me to put the Pats logo where the mail slot of the door was. I did that, to show them how gay it would look, and then did this as kind of a joke and they both loved it. Working with the two of them is interesting, because things I think they'll love they hate and things I hate and think they'll hate, they love. It's good though because they're also both completely unafraid to tell me when they think an idea is terrible. Anyway, above is the photo-illustration in the context of the page, and below is a closer look.
The whole thing was done in Quark, and in like, 35 seconds. Seriously. If I had spent any more time on it or made it any more complicated, I probably would have fucked it up. And even though I wasn't really married to it to begin with, I have to admit that it looked really good in print.
Next up, year-end culture section. We have a new kid in the culture department (because there's a new kid it's now a "culture department" and not just "Lindsay") so I guess Lindsay thought it would be ok to leave the country for a while. New kid was kind of shitting himself over the whole thing, so I helped him out. He had grand ideas for the layout of the year end spread but I reeled him in and showed him how sometimes by scaling back things you love you can come up with something you can be proud of that also fits into our paper. Below is the beginning spread of the culture section for the weekend. I also designed the cover, but then new kid put a Shins picture in one of the boxes so I'm kind of boycotting it right now.
Ok that's it for today. Maybe tomorrow I'll post some stuff from the Christmas issue. It was a little out of hand though and I'm not really sure how I feel about it yet.
